Day 4, Level 2.5: Wind chill, evening splendour, and a braided river
It was a lovely blue sky day today but very windy and really quite cold - a southerly with a large dose of chill factor.
I did a bit of marketing work, finished up several loose ends for various organisations, did a bit of writing. Just two new Covid cases today, which is positive news.
I headed to the beach at 6pm as the sky was turning a gorgeous shade of pink. I watched the tide come in for a while, the waves lapping and overlapping the shore. There was hardly anyone around. It was stunning - and it was freezing. I was wrapped up warm, had even put a scarf on. Wish I'd worn gloves! Definitely the coldest day we've had for quite some time.
The moon appeared over the horizon at 6.50pm (I was back at the house) - a deep burnt orange colour that took my breath away. It was twice as spectacular when viewed through the binoculars.
SHARE-NOTE OF THE DAY:
Rakaia River ...
The Rakaia River is a braided river in Canterbury. Braided rivers are wide but shallow, full of channels that split and rejoin each other. Such rivers are pretty spectacular and the Rakaia is no exception. Best viewed from above. The water is such a fabulous colour of aqua meets teal meets sapphire.
The Rakaia Gorge Bridge is one of the oldest wrought iron/wood bridges in NZ. Finding this photo prompted this Share-Note!
| I took this photo when we were down in Methven a few years ago. |
Here are some other photos of the river (not taken by me!)
