Day Twenty-Five - Late night, late morning and the beauty of Sleep

Hmm. I didn't get to bed until about 5.30am this morning! All for good reason ...
I was heading for bed at about 1am when I got a text from friend Jill in London "Are you awake?" Yes.
Next minute, we're Skyping. We (me, her and husband Peter) talked till after 5am in the morning (their afternoon of course). It was invigorating and wonderful, and shades of Mallorca! I think we solved all the problems of the world! Except Covid-19. Or possibly even that too, can't recall!

Consequently, there was no early rising this morning.
In fact, the neighbour texted well after 10 to enquire if I was actually alive!
He'd dropped off some home-made smoked fish pate, saw no sign of life and left it on the deck.

I did get lively before 11! That's less than 6 hours sleep. Not bad.
And probably a lot more than Jacinda, Ashley and Grant are getting these days!
At least I can indulge in wine, those poor souls are probably limited to a tiny glass!

Early afternoon, and another neighbour called by to deliver some mandarins. OMG I was sort of alive by then, but not very lively.
In yesterday's post I talked about there being no threat of people turning up on your doorstep and therefore no need for aesthetics. And OMG today I so wanted those aesthetics! But then again, who cares, these are friends. I don't need to look like I'm off to a special outing I'm not going to!

I didn't get to the beach today. Shocking, I know. But busy doing stuff and the day didn't beg me to step out into it.
So here's a photo of the fabulous La Concha beach in San Sebastian.
What a stunning beach in an all-round fantastic city. Basque Country is underrated and the pintxos are amazing. Go if and when you can, when travel restrictions lift. Outstanding.

La Concha, San Sebastian

Had an eye on Royal NZ Ballet Cinderella (not as engaging as the other two ballets I've watched on livestream, but gorgeous all the same) while doing some work, various work phone calls, and thinking/planning (work). This work is voluntary. And I hope it makes a difference in time to come. There are a few of us working on things, with plenty of minutes spent on phone calls today to progress things, as there will be tomorrow.

Had an eye on the One World live concert from midday. Not much of an eye, I have to say, as it didn't really grab me. I always like to see performers perform but this kinda lacked something.  There wasn't a lot of vivaciousness happening in any of those video clips, it was all rather perfunctory, as far as I could see. Shame.

Had an eye on Phantom of the Opera stage show (ALW production at Royal Albert Hall). I was distracted throughout with work and a dozen things, so didn't really see much of it. That's okay, it's not my fave. All the same, Sierra Boggess who plays Christine is utterly wonderful.

Delivered some of my pumpkin pie to the neighbours - who informed me that about seven Orcas were frolicking in the estuary by the causeway yesterday. Oh what a shame I missed that.

Had a 5pm drinks catch-up with friends - was late to that on account of a phone call, but it was excellent fun.

Then at 7pm did an online quiz for Hospice fundraising. More excellent fun. In fact, it was brilliant, loved it.

And tonight - in bed before midnight for once!!!

Brunch - ham, egg, avocado mcmuffins
Dinner - Mikey's famous chicken pesto pasta!
I was supposed to cook teriyaki chicken - but I got waylaid with all these things going on, especially drinks and quiz, and so Michael got busy in the kitchen recreating his signature dish! It was yum. He's a good boy. Most of the time!

SHARE-NOTE OF THE DAY:
Sleep ...
I'm a night owl and rarely go to bed before midnight. Which might seem like I'm not into sleep or able to sleep. Quite the contrary. I'm lucky, insomnia never got a hold of me. And I hope it never does.

If someone asked me what my favourite thing was in the whole wide world - I'd definitely say "sleep". It's the very best thing for all living creatures. It regenerates, discharges, recharges, and invigorates. And so much more. But I can't write it here as I want to get to sleep by midnight - and it's now 3 minutes to midnight! Gotta write/type quick!

I can sleep, and sleep, and sleep. Not getting to sleep is not an option for me. Hit the pillow, sleep.
For me, the best thing about waking up in the middle of the night, is the knowledge I can just go back for more sleep!
I never nana-nap, although I advocate that they're the greatest thing if that's what your mind/body calls for. I think I've had about half a dozen in my whole life. If the future holds nana-naps for me, I won't complain!

I'm not a fan of waking up, and take a while to get going.
But that's the domain of the morning lark. As I say, I'm a night owl!

An interesting observation:
- Morning people tend to admonish late risers as lazy or hopeless or whatever. They don't, perhaps, understand the energy that is expended during the night owl's late night world, or appreciate that the night owl benefits from a later start. Thing is, night owls generally tend to slip soundlessly into bed, intent on not disturbing those who went to sleep hours ago.
- Night owls rarely have a go at those who bounce out of bed at crack of dawn (who does that and why!?) But they are woken by them all the same - lights, showers, action. Silent sigh.

There's a general perception that being up at hideous crack of dawn is heroic. It's not. Especially if you're early to bed.
Staying up till the wee small hours, and then being alive when morning comes - that requires true stamina.
I've only seen a handful of sunrises and they're very nice.
But I've seen the stars/moon in the middle of the night just about every night!

Either/or is okay.
One is not better than the other!
They're just different ways of being.

Good night!
